The multi-award-winning Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospitals (BMDH) Expansion Project is changing the way we care for you in hospital.
The BMDH Expansion Project includes a major expansion of existing services to meet increasing demand and the creation of new services to reduce the need to travel out of the area for treatment.
The project also includes new clinical technology and a re-evaluation of how we’re delivering services so our facilities can support the best practices in contemporary hospital care.
To make sure we get it right, we’re talking to staff, patients, carers and the community about how we can improve the hospital experience.
We’ve already listened to what people want. Based on suggestions from patients and carers, we’ve introduced carer zones – lounges that convert into beds so carers can stay overnight with adult patients – and lounge areas for chemotherapy to help reduce stress and create a more relaxed environment in the new cancer centre. This approach has won both state and international awards for partnering with the community.
At Blacktown Hospital, a new step-down mental health unit, extensive internal refurbishment, infrastructure upgrades and more parking have already been completed. The new clinical services building for cancer, cardiac, respiratory and aged care will open in 2016.
Stage 1 at Mount Druitt Hospital delivered new facilities for rehabilitation, dental care, emergency, urgent care and sterilising, completed in 2014.
Our Stage 2 project is now underway to plan new facilities for emergency, women’s and newborn care, intensive care and theatres at Blacktown Hospital, and a new new dialysis service, more surgical capacity, drug health and medical imaging at Mount Druitt Hospital.
