Community Dialysis Centre

A welcmoning new centre is providing dialysis services close to home in a welcoming, friendly and patient-centred environment at Mount Druitt Hospital.

The community dialysis centre will help us meet the increasing demand for dialysis, and provide more services close to home for people in the local area.

The centre will include 12 spacious treatment bays with room for patients and a carer, garden views and dedicated parking with room for a community bus.

A comprehensive arts program, now well-established at Blacktown, will expand to Mount Druitt to help creat a facility which is welcoming and reflects local Aboriginal and community culture.

Home dialysis training and education will continue to be provided at the nearby Regional Dialysis Centre at Blacktown Hospital.

The centre is located near the existing Dental Unit.

Diabetes and dialysis in western Sydney

  • There are currently 750 patients receiving dialysis across western Sydney, and just over half receive at-home dialysis
  • The number of new dialysis patients across western Sydney is rising by 15 and 30 patients per year (4 per cent).
  • Almost half of our dialysis patients have renal failure due to their diabetes, and western Sydney is in the midst of a diabetes epidemic.
  • Diabetes testing in Blacktown and Mount Druitt emergency departments has revealed that 12,000 people have diabetes or at risk of diabetes in the region.
  • Kidney failure is highest in Aboriginal patients and Mount Druitt has a large community of Aboriginal people.
  • It’s important people receive dialysis close to home given patients are in hospital 4-5 hours at a time and three times a week.
