Activity-based working (ABW) is changing the way staff work at Blacktown Hospital and other facilities in Western Sydney Local Health District.

ABW allows staff to choose the tye of workspace they need, based on the work they are doing. 

ABW provides workspaces for individual work, group work, high focus work, private and confidential work, and social space for meals or a break from work. 

How does it work?

At home, you have different rooms for specific tasks. You cook in the kitchen, you do the washing in the laundry, and you sleep in the bedroom. Other tasks may be done in a variety of places. You might read in bed, on the balcony or verandah or in the lounge room. 

Activity-based working is the same. Rather than having a set desk where you do all your activities, you choose the work point that best suits your needs.

The main change is that you think about the task first and the location second. 

By thinking about the task first, you can choose the best setting for that task. For example: 
  • Focused work like reports or submissions can be completed more efficiently in a quiet “do not disturb” workspace, meaning no more interruptions.
  • Group tasks and meetings are held in areas designed for conversation and collaboration. They have the appropriate seating and technology to support more efficient group work.
  • There are dedicated areas for relaxation and socializing
  • Activity-based working uses communications and information technology to enable people to work in ways that best suit the activities they need to perform, without the traditional limitations of where tasks are required to be performed.

What is the advantage of ABW?

  • Activity-based working provides staff with the freedom and flexibility to choose a space and facilities that best suit the task they are working on.
  • Activity-based hubs include a variety of spaces, including quiet spaces for high-focused work, technology-enabled rooms for video and teleconferencing, formal collaboration spaces for small and large meetings and private spaces for confidential discussions. 
  • Informal spaces such as break-out zones for relaxing and recharging, and a kitchen area and chat booths for socialising also support staff health and wellbeing. 
  • Ultimately, activity-based working is about giving all staff access to facilities that enable them to achieve their best in their roles.
Activity-based working provides:
  • Enhanced flexibility and freedom for staff, allowing them to work in a way that suits their role and individual preferences
  • Improved communication and collaboration across business units
  • Increased sharing of ideas and knowledge

Activity-based working was very new to me. I've had an office for many years, so to work in an environment where you don't have an office was a change, but actually, it's worked really well. I've found it quite liberating because when I finish a meeting I can just sit where ever I am and continue working away. I really like the activity-based working - moving around depending on what you're doing during the day. Makes you think a bit more about the sort of work that you are doing and it lets you concentrate when you need to concentrate and relax a little bit more when you need to relax.
