stage 2 at Blacktown and mount druitt

We’re still growing and now Stage 2 of the Blacktown & Mount Druitt hospitals expansion project is underway.

Why are we growing?

The NSW Government recognises that our growing and ageing population, and massive expansion in Sydney’s west has fundamentally changed our community and the way we plan our health services.
Stage 2 continues our future service planning, addressing the services that were not covered in Stage 1 or that require further enhancement.
It will provide better access to services for the local community by providing more services closer to home and reducing the need to travel out of the area for treatment.
We also need to attract and retain valuable healthcare staff by creating contemporary working environments and more opportunities for training, education and research.

Stage 2 at Blacktown Hospital

At Blacktown Hospital, Stage 2 will create a new hospital building in front of the existing buildings and new facilities for:

  • New emergency department with more emergency and short stay beds and a new psychiatric emergency care service and dedicated unit in Emergency
  • New intensive care unit with more beds
  • Eight new operating theatres and space for future expansion
  • New purpose-built wards for expanded birthing (with a well-ness model of care), maternity, women’s health, and newborn care
  • New paediatric service with dedicated emergency department facilities, day stay and inpatient facilities
  • Medical imaging, sterilising and non-clinical support services expansion
  • Contemporary new activity-based workspaces for support staff
  • Expanded haemodialysis unit for hospital in-patients.

There will also be a new 420-space multi-storey car park, a new covered link into the hospital, a new hospital entry from Panorama Parade and other road improvements to create a more welcoming and easier-to-navigate hospital campus.

On completion, there will be a total of 1700 car spaces on site.

Many services currently located in the original hospital building (facing Blacktown Road) will move to the new acute services building.

When they relocate, the original building will be refurbished for endoscopy, gastroenterology, and more outpatient clinics.

The final configuration at Blacktown will be three major blocks, clustered around a central atrium entry providing a visual and physical connection between the buildings.

While planning for the major development is underway, we are starting early works to clear the space and upgrade infrastructure, ready for our high-tech new facilities.

Stage 2 at Mount Druitt Hospital

In Stage 1 at Mount Druitt Hospital, we expanded dental, emergency, and aged care and rehabilitation, improved the main entry and car parking areas, and upgraded power infrastructure and sterilising services to support our growing hospital.

Mount Druitt will continue to grow in Stage 2, providing a centre of excellence for elective surgery in addition to existing hospital services.

Stage 2 projects include:

  • A new community dialysis centre designed in partnership with consumer and carers, in a welcoming low-rise standalone facility with dedicated parking
  • New MRI unit on level 2 which will provide a new non-invasive diagnostic service which is particularly important for our paediatric patients.
  • New Recovery addition on level 2 including peri-operative support refurbishment and an additional operating room
  • New single-storey Drug Health Expansion adjacent to the existing privately operated facility with consulting, counselling and support areas
  • Relocation of the existing pre-admission clinics to a new purpose-built facility (to allow for the expansion of the recovery ward).

Community Renal Dialysis Centre

Artist impression community dialysis centre Mount Druitt

A new standalone, purpose-built community dialysis centre will be constructed at Mount Druitt Hospital to meet the increasing demand for local dialysis services. It will significantly reduce the need to travel out of the area for treatment. The centre will be domestic in scale, with natural light, comfortable treatment areas and dedicated parking. The centre has been planned with the help of patients and families to create a warm and welcoming environment.
