Project RED is a Western Sydney Local Health District whole-of-hospital redesign (RED) initative to improve the patient experience of care from GO to GO HOME.

Project RED involves key hospital departments (from emergency to cleaning) working together to improve emergency treatment performance and patient flow. It has helped reduce waiting times, improved transfer times and access to imaging, and improved discharge processes. Project RED is clincian-led, so the staff who have to implement the changes lead the the decision-making. 

At Blacktown Hospital, Project RED is improving patient flow and emergency treatment performance, and reconfiguring hospital systems and processes ready for the transition to the new acute services building in 2019.

At Blacktown Hospital, Project RED is creating:
  • A simpler, more streamlined patient flow from emergency to the wards
  • Improved management of patient transfers from wards, to Patient Discharge Unit, and then to home or to another facility
  • Improved clinical communication through a regular ED morning huddle
  • A more satisfying workplace for staff with more efficient systems and processes to support successful management of patients
  • Improved experience of care for patients
  • Supporting our staff to deliver safe, high quality care.
The first stage from mid 2017 focused on Emergency Department, Patient Flow, and Corporate Services with:
  • Improved streaming at triage for better patient management in Emergency
  • Expanded Emergency Department with access to 16 Short Stay beds to improve discharge or admission. This is an interim expansion of our ED to provide extra capacity while the new acute services building is under construction
  • Improved Patient Flow for more efficient transfers
  • Improvements to cleaning and portering, with dedicated teams to make services more effective and efficient
  • Redesigned roles for “big picture” patient management in Emergency Department
  • More efficient off-loading of ambulances on arrival
  • A focus on the 1 by 9 strategy to discharge one patient every day by 9am
  • Better use of the Patient Discharge Lounge to improve patient flow
At Mount Druitt Hospital, the team improved Emergency Treatment Performance. 

Stage 2 is now underway and will include bed reconfiguration and other initiatives.
